Choosing a Face Wash for Pregnancy

Which cleansing actives are considered safe in pregnancy, which to skip, and why a fragrance-free formula matters more when skin has turned reactive.

Face wash and a towel beside a basin

Your skin behaved perfectly well for a decade and now it does not, and the face wash you have used for years has started to sting.

None of it is dangerous, and most of it settles after the birth. That is not a reason to give up on your face, only to change what you reach for.

What you can still use

Azelaic acid. An antibacterial used for acne and rosacea, and it works on redness and pigmentation too. No adverse effects identified in pregnancy, which makes it one of the most useful things available to you right now.

Hyaluronic acid. Holds water in the skin. Good for dry or combination skin, well tolerated even at higher concentrations.

Lactic acid. An AHA found in exfoliating products, considered acceptable at cosmetic concentrations.

Vitamin C. Dark spots and uneven tone are common now, and retinoids, the usual answer, are off the table. Vitamin C supports collagen and evens tone, which makes it the practical substitute.

Sodium cocoyl glycinate. A mild cleanser that gives a creamy lather. Gentler than the sulfates it usually replaces.

Ethyl lauroyl arginate HCl. Derived from natural compounds, also used as a food additive. Strong antimicrobial activity, low toxicity, which makes it a useful preservative on sensitive skin.

Niacinamide. Vitamin B3, reduces redness and inflammation. Common in gentler acne and rosacea products, considered safe.

What to skip

Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, adapalene). The clearest avoid on the list.

High-dose salicylic acid, especially as a peel. Low concentrations in a rinse-off cleanser are generally fine.

Hydroquinone, usually postponed until afterwards because so much of it is absorbed.

Fragrance. On irritation grounds rather than danger. Your skin is more reactive now, fragrance is one of the most common causes of irritation, and it can hide phthalates.

How you wash matters as much as what you wash with

Twice a day is enough. Cleansing more often strips your skin, which leads to dryness and often more breakouts, which is precisely the opposite of what you were going for.

  • Lukewarm, not hot
  • Massage gently for about 30 seconds. Do not scrub
  • Pat dry rather than rubbing
  • Moisturise while your skin is still slightly damp

Skin that feels tight and squeaky afterwards has been over-cleansed. That means switching to something milder, not adding a stronger treatment on top.

One made for this stage

Mama's Choice Gentle Face Wash is formulated for pregnancy and breastfeeding and for all skin types, particularly dry, combination and sensitive. No SLS, with rice extract and hydrolysed collagen extract.

Matching it to what your skin is doing now

Your skin type may not be what it was six months ago, which is why last year's cleanser has stopped working.

Oilier than before. Very common in the first two trimesters, when androgens rise. Resist the urge to strip it. A gel or foaming cleanser twice a day is enough, and harsh cleansing makes oil production worse rather than better.

Drier than before. More common later on, and worse if you have air conditioning running. A cream or milk cleanser, and moisturiser while you are still damp.

Reacting to everything. Cut back to a cleanser and a moisturiser for a fortnight before adding anything. The instinct is to add a soothing product on top. The thing that works is subtraction.

Breaking out. Gentle cleansing, no picking, and a treatment on the spots rather than over your whole face. Whole-face treatment on skin that is already reactive usually gives you two problems.

About double cleansing

You will see it recommended everywhere, and it is genuinely useful on days you wore makeup or sunscreen. Oil-based first to lift what water cannot, then your usual wash.

On a day you wore neither, it is one step too many, and doing it every night on pregnancy skin is a common route to the tight, squeaky, over-cleansed feeling described above.

Be guided by what went on your face, not by a routine you read about.

A cleanser is one step of three

It removes what is sitting on your skin. It protects nothing.

The step that actually matters for the darker patches pregnancy brings is sunscreen. Daily Protection Face Moisturizer SPF 20 PA++ covers moisturising and sun protection together.

When it does not settle

  • Acne bad enough that you would want a prescription
  • A rash spreading, or itching intensely
  • Severe itching with no rash, especially on palms and soles. Same-day assessment
  • A prescribed treatment from before pregnancy you are unsure about continuing

That last one belongs with the doctor who prescribed it. Stopping without asking creates a different problem.
