Six Things to Check Before Buying a Manual Breast Pump

They look identical on the shelf, and one of them will make your hand ache and the other will not.

Six things separate them, and price is not among them.

Flange size, first and most important

The thing that matters most and the thing least often mentioned on the packaging.

Too narrow and it rubs your nipple and makes it sore. Too wide and it drags in areola, which reduces how much milk actually comes out.

Your nipple should move freely inside the tunnel without much areola being pulled in. Sizes differ between Mamas, and often between your own two sides.

Check whether the pump comes with more than one size, or whether other sizes can be bought separately. One that only fits one size fits fewer of us.

A valve that seals

The valve is the small silicone part creating the suction. If it does not seal, the pump feels weak however hard you work the handle.

Look for one that is easy to remove, easy to inspect, and available as a replacement. Valves are consumables. They soften with use, and a tired valve is the most common reason a pump stops working well.

How many parts need washing

Every part that touches milk gets washed after every use, several times a day, when you are already short of time.

Materials safe with milk

Food-grade silicone and polypropylene, and check for BPA-free labelling.

Anything that holds milk, gets heated for sterilising, and is used for months deserves that check.

A handle that suits your hand

You will squeeze this several hundred times per session. A handle with comfortable travel and a smooth action is the difference between a pump that gets used and one that lives in a cupboard.

Hold it before buying if you can. If you cannot, look for reviews that mention hand fatigue specifically rather than general praise.

Bottles that fit what you own

Standard neck sizes vary. A pump whose bottles fit your existing teats and storage bottles saves decanting, which saves washing and reduces spills.

What not to pay extra for

Extra suction settings. On a manual pump, your hand is the suction setting.

Packaging and accessories. A carry bag does not express milk.

Very high stated suction figures. Comfort beats maximum pressure. Above a comfortable level, stronger suction compresses the ducts and produces less, not more.

"Hospital grade" on a manual pump, which is not a regulated term in this context.

So which one

The one that fits you, seals properly, and has few enough parts that you will still be washing it diligently in week six.

One thing no pump does
