Why Your Face Changes in Pregnancy: The Explanation

A swollen nose, dark patches, under-eye shadows and breakouts all have straightforward causes. What is happening, and what settles after birth.

People keep telling you that you are glowing.

You have just seen yourself in daylight.

Every change on this list has a mechanism, and almost all of them reverse.

Your nose looks broader

Your blood volume has risen by around half, and the mucous membranes have swelled with it. That includes the lining of your nose, which is why you have been congested since roughly February, and why the nose looking back at you in photographs is not quite the one you remember.

It settles within weeks of the birth, once blood volume comes back down.

Dark patches

Oestrogen and progesterone stimulate melanin production. Melasma across your forehead, cheeks and upper lip, along with a darker line down your belly and darker nipples.

What makes it worse: sun exposure, reliably.

What helps: sunscreen every morning, no exceptions. It is the only thing on this page that changes the outcome rather than waiting it out.

Shadows under your eyes

Broken sleep and increased blood volume both contribute. The skin under your eye is the thinnest on your face. The vessels beneath show through.

What helps: sleep, which is not advice anyone finds useful, and a moisturiser that keeps the area from looking dry and creased.

Breakouts

More oil production, plus skin that is more reactive, means acne in Mamas who have not had it since they were seventeen.

What helps: gentle cleanser twice a day, and niacinamide or azelaic acid.

What to avoid: retinoids, high-dose salicylic acid, and the urge to scrub. Scrubbing irritated skin makes both the redness and the pigmentation worse.

Skin that reacts to everything

More blood flow and a more reactive immune response mean products that were fine in March sting in June.

What helps: fragrance-free formulas, one new product at a time, and a patch test on your inner arm for two days.

Stretch marks

Not on your face, and they belong on any honest list of what pregnancy does to how you look.

Tears in the dermis, where skin stretched faster than it could adapt. They fade from red to silvery white over six to twelve months. No cream prevents them.

A routine that fits around all of it

Gentle Face Wash uses rice extract and hydrolysed collagen on a mild base.

What settles, and when

Within weeks of the birth: the nasal swelling, most of the puffiness.

Over months: melasma, the line on your belly, and the acne, as your hormones settle.

Over six to twelve months: stretch marks fading from red to silvery white.

Often permanent: slightly darker nipples and areolas, and sometimes a change in hair texture.

None of the permanent ones need fixing.

The part worth saying plainly

A face that looks different during pregnancy is doing exactly what a body under this much hormonal change does. It is not a failure of skincare, and it does not require correcting.

If you would like to care for it, the routine above is a sensible one. If you would rather leave it entirely alone, most of it resolves anyway.

When to see a doctor

  • Swelling of your face and hands with a severe headache or changes to your vision. Urgent
  • Acne bad enough that you would want a prescription
  • Severe itching with no rash, particularly palms and soles
  • A mole changing size, shape or outline

The first one is a sign of pre-eclampsia, and it belongs in a list of appearance changes precisely because it can be mistaken for one.
