Stretch Marks on Thighs: Causes and What Helps
Thigh stretch marks are not only a pregnancy thing. What causes them, how common they really are, and what fading them can realistically achieve.

They turn up on the backs of your thighs, where you cannot see them properly, and you have no idea when they arrived.
Close to 90% of people get stretch marks somewhere. They are also not only a pregnancy thing, which is the part most articles leave out.
What causes them
Fine lines that form when your body changes size faster than your skin can adapt. Red, purple, reddish-brown or dark brown depending on your skin tone.
Weight changing fast, in either direction. The connective fibres get stretched past what they can absorb, and they tear.
Puberty. Hormonal change causes rapid growth, particularly across the thighs and breasts. According to DermNet, around 70% of adolescent girls and 40% of boys get them. One of the most common skin changes there is.
Muscle growth. Training that builds size quickly stretches the skin over it. Marks that appear this way tend to stay even if the training stops, particularly on less elastic skin.
Some medications. Topical steroids thin the skin, which makes marks more likely. Documented in the dermatology literature, and a reason not to use steroid creams for long stretches without medical advice.
Can you prevent them
Not reliably. Nothing guarantees you will escape, because the strongest predictor is genetics.
The habits below are still worth having, mostly because each helps for other reasons anyway.
Stay hydrated. Enough fluid keeps skin more supple. No magic number of glasses; drinking to thirst covers most people.
Eat for your skin. Zinc from nuts and fish. Vitamins A, C and D from carrots, citrus and dairy. Protein from chicken, lean beef and pulses.
Keep moving. Exercise improves circulation and supports collagen production, which keeps skin stronger and more elastic. Building muscle very quickly is the version that raises the risk, not exercise itself.
Let weight change gradually. Skin adapts better to months than to weeks.
What fading actually means
Nothing removes stretch marks completely. What is possible is making them less noticeable.
Fresh marks respond better than settled ones. Red or purple still has active blood supply beneath it. Silvery white is mature scar tissue.
The limit, stated once: no moisturiser has been shown to prevent stretch marks. What good care offers is comfort while your skin stretches and a softer look afterwards.
Moisturise consistently. Twice a day, ideally straight after a shower while your skin is still damp, massaged rather than smeared.
Consistency over months makes far more difference than which product you bought.
A serum for older marks. Lighter textures absorb faster and are aimed at marks already formed.
Mama's Choice Stretch Mark Cream is water-based and non-sticky, with Lypobelle Soyaglicone, aloe vera and shea butter.
Mama's Choice Stretch Mark Serum uses alpha bisabolol, mugwort and niacinamide.
Both made for pregnancy and breastfeeding, and both work equally well on stretch marks that have nothing to do with either.
What a clinic can do afterwards
Laser, microdermabrasion and chemical peels are used in dermatology practice. They improve appearance rather than removing marks, they take several sessions, and they are usually postponed until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When to see a doctor
Stretch marks themselves rarely need medical attention. Worth raising if:
- They appear very fast and widely with no weight change
- Your skin feels unusually thin and bruises easily
- They are painful, warm, or ringed with spreading redness
- Weight has climbed sharply on your upper body only
That combination can point to a hormonal condition such as Cushing's syndrome, which needs assessment in its own right.

- Prevalence survey (n=1,515): how many Mamas get stretch marks. It measures no product at all.
- Spincontrol Thailand 2023 (n=22): up to 65% reduction in appearance over 28 days, with Cream and Serum used together. Both at once, no comparison group, so it cannot be split between them.
- Consumer satisfaction surveys: the share of Mamas who felt a change. Impressions, not measurements.
