Mugwort in Skincare: What the Evidence Says

Mugwort appears in Korean skincare and in stretch mark serums. What it does, what has actually been tested, and where the evidence stops.

Small-leaved herbal plant

It is on the front of half the Korean skincare in the shop, usually shortened to nothing at all, and in Indonesia you may know the plant as daun baru Cina.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is real and its properties are real. The marketing has run some distance ahead of the published evidence, and the point here is to keep those apart so you can decide what a mugwort product is worth to you.

Where it comes from

Native to northern Europe, Asia and parts of North America. Root, leaf, stem and flower have all been used traditionally, as extracts, tonics, teas, powders and essential oil.

Skincare uses the leaf extract. Concentrations are low, and it almost always sits alongside other actives.

What it is thought to do

Calm inflammation. The property cited most often, and the one with the most published work behind it.

Research in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in Artemisia extracts. Read that carefully: the work was done in the laboratory. Activity in a dish does not automatically transfer to skin on a person, and the human evidence is thin.

What that supports is a reasonable expectation of a calming effect on dry or irritated skin. Not a treatment claim.

Antibacterial activity. A paper in Molecules reported it for Artemisia species. Laboratory work again. This gets stretched into an acne claim, and that goes further than the evidence does.

Soothing skin that is reacting, whether from insect bites, a mild allergic flare or heat rash. Same anti-inflammatory reasoning, same limits.

Moisture. Mugwort contains vitamin E, which genuinely conditions and hydrates. In a finished product the moisturising comes from the whole formula rather than one plant extract, so judge the moisturiser rather than the ingredient.

Wrinkles. A study in the Journal of the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition reported protection against UVB-induced wrinkling. In mice. A reason to be interested, not a reason to expect anything from a cream.

Mugwort in pregnancy

An important distinction, and easy to miss.

On your skin, at the low concentrations used in cosmetics, mugwort extract is considered fine, and it appears in products formulated for pregnancy.

Swallowed, mugwort has traditionally been used to bring on menstruation, and it is not something to drink as a tea or take as a supplement while pregnant. If you drink herbal teas, check what is in them.

The two uses are not interchangeable. A cream is not a tea.

Where we use it

Mama's Choice Stretch Mark Serum uses mugwort as its anti-inflammatory component, with alpha bisabolol for regeneration and niacinamide for tone.

Mama's Choice Stretch Mark Serum

Stretching skin is itchy and slightly inflamed, which is exactly the problem this part of the formula is for. Serum first, then Stretch Mark Cream over it.

No alcohol, no parabens.

Reading the numbers

The "72% reduction in 30 days" figure circulates for the serum. Its measurement point is not documented, so treat it as a user impression rather than a clinical result.

What is documented: the Spincontrol Thailand 2023 test (n=22), up to 65% reduction in appearance over 28 days, with the cream and serum applied together. Both at once, no comparison group, so nothing in it can be attributed to either product alone.

And underneath all of it: no moisturiser has been shown to prevent stretch marks. Comfort while your skin stretches, and a softer result afterwards, is what good care offers.

If you get hay fever

Mugwort is in the daisy family, with ragweed, chamomile and marigold. People allergic to one of those sometimes react to the others.

So patch test. A little on your inner forearm, left for a couple of days, before anything containing mugwort goes anywhere large.
