Somebody will tell you a lotion can lighten your baby's skin. It cannot.

Skin colour is genetic. No lotion changes it, and a product promising otherwise is telling you something untrue on the front of the bottle, which is not a good sign about the rest.

What a lotion does is keep skin soft, comfortable and intact. That is the thing worth buying, and the standard to judge one against.

What healthy baby skin actually looks like

Soft, not scaly. Dry skin irritates more easily and reacts to more things.

Plump. A working barrier holds its own moisture, which is why his cheeks feel the way they do.

An even tone, head to foot. The colour follows you and his father. What matters is that it is consistent. A patch redder than the rest, especially a rough one, is skin asking for attention.

What keeps it that way

Keep him out of direct sun. Baby skin is thin and burns fast. Shade, a hat, long light clothing. Sunscreen is not recommended under 6 months, so the shade has to do the work.

Feed him well. Vitamin C helps collagen and tissue repair. It does not lighten anyone's skin, and no amount of it moves pigment. Under 6 months that means milk and nothing else.

Keep him moisturised. Dry skin cracks, and cracks let bacteria in.

Choose the lotion carefully. Plenty of baby lotions carry artificial colour and fragrance, both common triggers. A short ingredient list beats a long one every time.

Five things to check before you buy

Water-heavy for every day. High water content means light, fast-absorbing, right for skin that is basically fine.

Oil-heavier for skin already dry. Heavier on the skin, better at repairing genuinely dry patches. Match the product to what his skin is doing now, not to a product that claims to do everything.

Vitamins as support, not the headline. C, E, B3 and B5 help the barrier. They are the supporting cast. A simple fragrance-free base matters more than the vitamin list on the front.

Something you will actually use daily. The best lotion is the one that goes on after every bath. Consistency beats formulation.

No fragrance, no dye. The single most useful filter for sensitive skin. Watch the wording: "fragrance-free" and "unscented" are not the same, and unscented sometimes means a masking fragrance was added.

Ours

Mama's Choice Baby Skin Vitamin Lotion uses avocado to hydrate and protect against free radicals, olive oil for regeneration, and vitamins C, E, B3 and B5 with niacinamide.

Mama's Choice Baby Skin Vitamin Lotion

Twice a day after bathing, over the body. Not the face.

Hypoallergenic, dermatologically tested, no alcohol, parabens or mineral oil.

Survey figures on our packaging come from internal customer satisfaction surveys. They record what Mamas felt, not measured change in skin.

Patch test everything

A small amount on his inner arm, then wait a day or two. It costs nothing, and it is the only reliable way to find out how your particular baby responds.

When to put it on

After the bath, on skin that is still slightly damp, patted rather than rubbed dry. That traps water already in the skin, which is most of what a moisturiser does.

Leave it much longer and you are moisturising dry skin, which works less well for no extra effort.

Lotion, cream or oil

Not interchangeable, and the difference is water content.

For most babies in this climate, a lotion daily is right, with something heavier kept back for the patches that need it.

Oil alone is worth a warning. It seals, but it adds no water, so putting it on dry skin with nothing underneath does less than people expect.

How long before you can tell

Dryness responds fast. Skin that has been dry for weeks usually feels different within a few days of daily moisturising, and looks different within a fortnight.

If nothing has shifted after two weeks of using it properly, the problem probably is not simple dryness, and adding a second product on top is the wrong next move.

When a lotion is the wrong answer

  • Itchy patches that come and go, especially on cheeks or in elbow and knee creases, which sounds like eczema
  • Skin that weeps, crusts yellow, or feels warm
  • A rash spreading fast, or arriving with a fever
  • Dryness no better after a fortnight of daily moisturising

Those need a doctor. Moisturiser is the right answer to dry skin and the wrong answer to nearly everything on that list.
